Uniqueness of Stationary Equilibrium Payoffs in the Baron-Ferejohn Model
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider a multilateral sequential bargaining model in which the players may differ in their probability of being selected as the proposer and the rate at which they discount future payoffs. For games in which agreement requires less than unanimous consent, we characterize the set of stationary subgame perfect equilibrium payoffs. With this characterization, we establish the uniqueness of the equilibrium payoffs. For the case where the players have the same discount factor, we show that the payoff to a player is nondecreasing in his probability of being selected as the proposer. For the case where the players have the same probability of being selected as the proposer, we show that the payoff to a player is nondecreasing in his discount factor. Uniqueness of stationary equilibrium payoffs in the Baron–Ferejohn model with risk-averse players
I study a multilateral sequential bargaining model among risk-averse players in which the players may differ in their probability of being selected as the proposer and the rate at which they discount future payoffs. For games in which agreement requires less than unanimous consent, I characterize the set of stationary subgame perfect equilibrium payoffs. With this characterization, I establish ...
متن کاملA comment on Baron and Ferejohn (1989): The open rule equilibrium and coalition formation
I present a more general characterization of the symmetric stationary subgame perfect equilibrium to the Baron and Ferejohn (1989) open rule divide-the-dollar game. Specifically, I show that an amender can follow several different randomization strategies when deciding whom to make offers to, and each can be sustained as a distinct equilibrium with slightly different payoffs. The result demonst...
متن کاملLegislative Bargaining with Long Finite Horizons
Institutional rules provide natural deadlines for negotiations in legislative bargaining. In the continuous-time bargaining model framework of Ambrus and Lu (2010) we show that as the time horizon of the bargaining increases, equilibrium payoffs with deadline converge to stationary equilibrium payoffs of the infinite-horizon bargaining game. We provide a characterization of these limit payoffs,...
متن کاملCoalitional Bargaining with Markovian Proposers
The paper generalizes coalitional bargaining of the Baron-Ferejohn type (Eraslan and McLennan, 2006) to non-independent proposers. Widening the scope of possible proposer dynamics significantly, this allows for likely continued offers, alternating offers (Calvó-Armengol, 2001b), and deterministic dynamics such as clockwise rotation of proposers (Herrero, 1985). Existence of stationary subgame p...
متن کاملComputation of equilibrium values in the Baron and Ferejohn bargaining model
Computation of exact equilibrium values for n-player divide-the-dollar legislative bargaining games as in Baron and Ferejohn (1989) with general quota voting rules, recognition probabilities, and discount factors, can be achieved by solving at most n bivariate square linear systems of equations. The approach recovers Eraslan’s (2002) uniqueness result and relies on a characterization of equilib...
